Privacy Policy
1. Who we are
Do What Kids Do ("DWKD," "we," "us," or "our") is an early childhood development brand. Our app and website empower parents, educators, and caregivers — adults — to help young children build life and social-emotional skills through stories, activities, and guided dialogue. DWKD is designed for adults, not children. Children do not create accounts or use the app directly. This policy explains what information we collect from the adults who use DWKD, how we use it, and the choices you have. Questions? Email info@dowhatkidsdo.com.
2. Information we collect
We collect only what we need to run and improve DWKD. We may share or sell the information we collect with third parties — for analytics, research, advertising, and other business purposes. How and what we share is described in Section 4, and your choices (including how to opt out where the law gives you that right) are in Section 8.
- Account information: your email address and a securely hashed password. If you sign in with Apple, an Apple-provided identifier and, if you choose to share it, your name and email (or Apple's private relay email). You may optionally provide your name and whether you are a parent, educator, or family/friend, used only to tailor the guidance we show you.
- Child profile information (entered by you): a nickname (not necessarily the child's real name), the child's birth month and year (used to estimate age range — not a full date of birth), and the behavior or skill areas you choose to follow. Entered by the adult account holder; the child does not interact with the app.
- Behavior analyzer input: when you describe a situation by typing or speaking, your device converts speech to text on-device; we store the resulting text and the guidance generated from it. We do not store audio recordings.
- Usage and engagement: limited in-app activity such as content you view, save, or mark as helpful, and your poll votes.
- Website information: if you contact us or sign up for the beta through dowhatkidsdo.com, we collect the details you submit (such as your name, email, and message).
- Consent and technical records: consent type, timestamp, the policy version you agreed to, and technical details such as your IP address and device/browser user-agent, to maintain a record of consent and protect the service.
What we do not collect: we do not collect your precise location, your contacts, your photos or media library, or audio recordings (voice is converted to text on your device). We do not knowingly collect information directly from children.
3. How we use your information
- Provide, maintain, and personalize the DWKD app and its content;
- Generate tailored guidance, strategies, and content recommendations;
- Authenticate you and keep your account secure (including detecting suspicious sign-in activity);
- Maintain records of consent and comply with our legal obligations;
- Improve our content and features in aggregate;
- Communicate with you about the service when necessary.
We rely on your consent and on our legitimate interest in operating and improving the service as the legal bases for processing, where applicable.
4. AI processing and service providers
To generate guidance and content, we share the text you provide to the behavior analyzer (and related context) with Anthropic, our AI provider, which processes it on our behalf to return analysis and strategies. We send the minimum necessary and never your account credentials. Anthropic processes this data as our service provider and does not use it to train its models on terms inconsistent with this policy.
We also rely on the following service providers ("subprocessors") to operate DWKD. They process data only as needed to provide their service to us:
| Provider | Purpose | Data involved |
|---|---|---|
| Anthropic | AI analysis & content generation | Behavior analyzer text, content prompts |
| MongoDB Atlas | Database hosting | Account, child profile, engagement, and analysis data |
| Railway | Application/server hosting | All data in transit through our API |
| Contentful | Content management/delivery | App content (no account personal data) |
| Apple | Sign in with Apple (if you use it) | Apple user identifier, optional name/email |
| On-device speech-to-text on Android; app distribution | Speech may be processed by your device's speech service to produce text | |
| Expo | App delivery and updates | Device/app technical data for update delivery |
Third-party sharing. We may share or sell the information we collect — such as account, usage, engagement, and device data, in identifiable or de-identified form — with third parties for analytics, research, advertising, and other business purposes. We do not share the child-profile details or behavior-analyzer entries you provide with third parties for their own purposes. Where applicable law treats this sharing as a "sale" or "sharing," you can opt out — see Section 8.
5. Data retention and deletion
We keep your information for as long as your account is active or as needed to provide the service. Child profiles you delete are removed from active use immediately and purged on a routine schedule (we retain a soft-deleted record briefly to honor deletion and prevent accidental loss).
You can request deletion of your account and associated data at any time by emailing info@dowhatkidsdo.com, or by using the in-app account deletion option where available. We will delete or anonymize your data within 30 days, except where we must retain limited records to comply with legal obligations.
6. Children's privacy
DWKD is intended for adults (16+). We do not direct the app to children and do not knowingly collect personal information from children. The limited child-related information in the app (nickname, birth month/year, skill areas) is provided by the adult account holder about their child, for the adult's own use in the app. If you believe a child has provided us information directly, contact info@dowhatkidsdo.com and we will delete it.
7. Security
We protect your data using industry-standard measures, including encryption in transit (HTTPS/TLS), encryption at rest through our hosting providers, hashed passwords, and rotating, reuse-detecting authentication tokens. No method of transmission or storage is completely secure, but we work to protect your information and to notify you of material breaches as required by law.
8. Your rights
Depending on where you live, you may have the right to access, correct, delete, or export your personal information, to object to or restrict certain processing, and to withdraw consent. Where we sell or share personal information, you also have the right to opt out of that sale or sharing — email us or use any in-app or on-site opt-out control we provide. To exercise these rights, email info@dowhatkidsdo.com. We will respond within the timeframe required by applicable law. You also have the right to lodge a complaint with your local data protection authority.
9. International transfers
We are based in the United States and our providers may process data in the United States and other countries. Where required, we use appropriate safeguards for international transfers.
10. Changes to this policy
We may update this policy from time to time. When we make material changes, we will update the version and effective date above and, where appropriate, notify you in the app. Your continued use of DWKD after an update means you accept the revised policy.
